Scrap Metal Recycling Regulations
To ensure that scrap metal buyers and sellers are trading in a way that is fair for their customers, the UK Government enforces scrap metal recycling regulations.
But, what is scrap metal recycling and what are the regulations surrounding the process?
What Is Scrap Metal Recycling?
Scrap metal recycling refers to the process of turning old, possibly rusty, or simply no-longer needed scrap metal, into a new product that can be used again!
Here at Kas Metal Trading, we have been refining our scrap metal recycling processes for over 30 years to make the trading experience as straight-forward as possible.
As soon as you step into our scrap yard, our friendly and efficient scrap metal merchants are ready to help you weigh-in your scrap metal. There will be a designated area for your vehicle, away from all others on-site, and safe unloading/waiting areas where you can watch your scrap metal being weighed. After weighing your scrap, our merchants will use the latest in metal analysis systems to assess the quality of your ferrous or non-ferrous metal, which will help us to decipher a price. Following this, you will receive a fully compliant (with waste regulations) payment ticket, detailing all the information regarding weighing and grading. We base all of our prices on the world centre for industrial pricing – the London Metal Exchange (LME) – so you can rest assured that you are receiving a reliable and competitive price for your scrap metal.
We have a wide range of payment options available, including our pre-paid card method, which can be uploaded with funds at the point of weigh-in and used as a normal debit card or to withdraw money!
Now we’ve established what scrap metal recycling is, what are the rules and regulations surrounding the process?
Scrap Metal Dealers Act (2013)
In 2013, following reports from the Government Home Office of 61,349 metal theft offences, the UK Government introduced the Scrap Metal Dealers Act (2013) – which introduced the following scrap metal recycling regulations:
- A licence is required for metal trading and must be issued by the local authority.
- Any site that is caught trading without a licence may be fined up to £5,000.
- Payments cannot be made in cash, all payments must be made through electronic bank transfer or cheque.
- Records of a seller’s name and address must be retained, as well as a record of the receipt of the metal.
