- Authoritative Licensing: Local authorities must license scrap metal dealers in order for them to carry out trades and transactions.
- Detailed Record-Keeping: In-depth, up-to-date records must be kept for all transactions in order to prevent metal theft. Records must include the type and quantity of metal, the date, and the seller’s details.
- Valid Photo Identification: Whoever is selling the scrap metal must provide valid photo identification at the point of trading, e.g. a passport or driver’s license, in order to prevent fraud.
- No Cash Payments: Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act, cash payments are not allowed for scrap metal transactions. They must be made via bank transfer or cheque, so they remain traceable and secure.
