How Do Metals Become Rusty?
Rust is a chemical compound, also known as iron oxide. This compound occurs when iron, or other similar ferrous metal products, react to water and oxygen. This causes a reddish-brown colour to form on the surface of the metals.

The short answer is yes! Scrap metal can still be recycled, even when it has rusted. You can either try to remove the rust before bringing it to us, or weigh-it-in with us as is, and still earn that extra bit of cash for your pocket.
How Does Rusted Metal Recycling Work?
Different types of scrap metal can rust or corrode in different ways, or not at all. For instance, ferrous metals such as iron and steel, possess the raw materials necessary to become a true, rusted metal. Whereas, non-ferrous metals such as copper and aluminium, do not contain a significant amount of iron within their chemical composition, or any magnetic properties, and therefore do not rust.
How To Get The Best Price For Your Rusted Scrap Metal
As non-rusted metal is worth more, if your ferrous scrap metal is only slightly rusted, you should be able to remove the rust pretty easily using a sander or grinder to get rid.
However, if your scrap metal is severely rusted, the only option is to recycle it as it is for less money. There are preventative measures you can put in place though, to ensure the scrap metal you might like to recycle stays non-rusted. For example, anti-corrosion applications for recyclable metals exposed to the external elements, or storing them in a dry place.
