Which Grades of Brass Can Be Recycled at Our Scrap Brass Recycling Yard?
The amount of zinc present is the main factor that will affect which grade a piece of scrap brass is. Therefore, the lower the zinc content, the higher the grade will be. We have included some examples of scrap brass grades below.
Alpha Brass
Characterised by a higher copper content (around 60-70%) and a lower zinc content (approximately 30-35%), Alpha Brass is known for its excellent ductility, corrosion-resistance, and golden hue. This grade of scrap brass is well-suited to applications that require a metal with good ductility and high corrosion-resistance, e.g. cartridge cases and decorative items.
Alpha-Beta Brass
Contains a mix of alpha and beta phases, with approximately 55-65% copper and 35-45% zinc. Alpha Beta Brass offers a balance of strength and machinability in comparison to Alpha Brass. Alpha-Beta Brass is commonly used in marine fittings and structural components.
Beta Brass
This composition of brass contains a higher zinc content (around 45%) and a lower copper content. Beta Brass is known for its high strength, but low ductility when compared to Alpha and Alpha-Beta Brass. This grade of scrap brass is often used in applications that require strength and resistance to wear, e.g. taps, windows, and door fittings.
